The importance of diagnostics, raising public awareness, and responsibility for health, are important topics we are discussing with the oncosurgeon of the Institute of Clinical Oncology, MD. Professor Paata Khorava
What is the importance of Screening and Culture of Diagnostic?
Many people visit the doctor only when they have some health concern. However, most oncology diseases are asymptomatic at the initial stage, and here comes the importance of preventive medicine, screening, and early diagnostics.
Screening and regular medical examination contribute to the timely detection of disease. This is especially important for oncological pathologies.
Early detected disease is more easily and effectively curable than that detected later.
We should not remember our health only when we are sick. Preventive medical visits should become our lifestyle.
It is important to inform the population that regular check-up settles many problems in a long-term perspective.
Depending on age and risk factors, everyone has to get at least one check-up annually. Some patients may need to be tested more frequently, depending on family history, lifestyle, or other factors.
Most malignant tumors grow slowly, taking years to manifest symptoms. E.g.: lung, stomach, thyroid, liver, colon tumors. Statistically, thyroid pathology is in second place in Georgia, with 700 cases recorded annually. Breast cancer recorded cases is 1400, most of which are young women, under 50 years old. Everyone teaches the symptoms, but how many symptoms should a woman remember? The best option is a timely visit to the doctor and early detection of disease. This culture should be introduced and taught in school. Screening data also demonstrate the attitude within the public, when only 20%-22% of women and 1%-2% of men undergo annual examinations. 90% of patients addressing us are diagnosed with stage 3-4 disease, 60% - stage 4, and 10% - stage 1-2. 9 out of 10 are late cases.
Society should become aware that visit to the doctor is not only for sick people but also a part of health retaining culture.
Enhance the responsibility for your health. Timely visit to the doctor and regular screening will not only help you maintain your health but also significantly improve your quality of life.
