ICO history

After acquiring professional knowledge and needed experience, the idea of founding an oncology clinic responding to the standards of modern medicine emerged. This soon became a real project, and shortly, in 2012, Professor Gia Nemsadze opened a new clinic under the name "Institute of Clinical Oncology," which soon gained the patients’ trust.

ICO has grown and developed over the years. Today, it is a powerful medical and diagnostic center, providing services in almost all major medical directions. Timely diagnostics and effective management of precancerous diseases and cancer are the main directions of ICO.

In August 2023, considering the regulations established by the Ministry of Health of Georgia, the Institute of Clinical Oncology was expanded – it annexed Tbilisi “Cancer Center."  The clinic's premises were restructured, and new, modern departments were opened.

In February 2024, the renovated Department of Chemotherapy and Clinical Studies began operating, providing patients with spaces, tailored to modern standards; a comfortable environment was created, and the department was staffed with highly qualified staff.

Since March 2024, the surgical department has successfully resumed its functioning. The operating rooms and intensive care unit have been equipped with the latest-generation equipment. Each ward of the hospital is equipped with modern and comfortable medical equipment.

Services offered by the clinic to the patients:

  • outpatient department,
  • Diagnostics,
  • Surgery,
  • Oncology surgery,
  • Clinical oncology (chemotherapy) (see. services)
  • Reconstructive surgery

The treatment methods and material-technical base, introduced in ICO  allow us to  timely diagnose, prevent, and screen precancerous diseases; perform all the tests needed for the patient in one space and in the shortest possible time, and plan the treatment strategy, considering the international guidelines.

ICO is involved in different projects and programs (see. Involvement), caring not only for patients but also for the development of professional qualification of its staff and the formation of a new generation of professional doctors.

Annually, Institute of Clinical Oncology provides different types of medical services to 70,000 patients on average. About 2000-2300 surgical operations of various complexity are performed, among them: surgery for head and neck, chest and abdomen, mammology, gynecology, urology, skin, soft tissues, and bone tumors.

Non-standard surgeries for advanced and recurrent tumors are developed and widely implemented in the clinic.

In 2024, Institute of Clinical Oncology (ICO) successfully passed the American (AACI) International Accreditation and became the first medical institution with an oncology profile, in the region, meeting the requirements and standards of the international commission.

Mission

We exist to give hope to those who need it most. ICO is not a place where patients receive only modern medical care, it is a family where each member is focused on the individuals and their well-being. Our main driving force is to do good, as we know, there is no greater power than this.
