Digital radiographic mammography with tomosynthesis, i.e. 3D mammography plays an important role in the early detection of breast cancer. This method is considered the “gold standard” for breast diagnosis as it is characterized by high (>92%) specificity. The latest digital mammography machine HOLOGIC ensures outstanding image quality with minimal radiation dose and short examination time.
This machine made a revolution in the early detection of breast cancer and mammary gland diseases in general. It enables to reconstruct both 2D and 3D images with a single exposure. Tomosynthesis allows us to obtain images of breast layers up to 1 mm thick and, therefore, to diagnose any pathologies that cannot be visualized on 2D examination due to their small size and “superimposed” (overlapping) image.
The stuies prove, that compared to a standard mammogram, mammography with tomosynthesis is 25-35% more effective in detecting breast cancer. This method provides better visualization of contours and gives more precise localization of a pathology, which is the key problem during the evaluation of radiologically high-density mammary glands. In addition, the frequency of false positive diagnoses is significantly reduced. In addition to mammography-tomosynthesis, the HOLOGIC mammography machine has the functions of mammography with contrast and stereotactic vacuum biopsy.
Stereotactic biopsy plays a crucial role in the evaluation of microcalcifications and small architectural disorganization. The advantage of biopsy with the HOLOGIC machine is the high-quality visualization and the ability to perform biopsy with tomosynthesis, which is lacking in previous stereotactic biopsy devices.
